Today I did a brief talk for my new favorite organization, Tucson Sisters-in-Crime. Each month a member shares a hobby or area of expertise. The purpose is simple: other writers might need to know the details about how to sail a boat, how to take good care of a lizard, etc.
My "hobby talk" was an introduction to the world of mariachi. I briefly outlined the instrumentation--guitarron, vihuela, violin, guitar, and trumpet--before playing a few sample rhythms and explaining the typical subject matter of the songs: I luv you, I really really luv you, I luv you but you make me suffer!
Then I detailed my love of another kind of song: the revenge song! I did a quick rendition of "Serian las dos," It Was Two A.M." before leading a chorus of "Cielito lindo." Viva el mariachi! I couldn't have asked for a better way to advertise the soon-to-be published Mariachi Murder. So many deserving victims to kill! All in good time.
