Our luck held out. By the time we reached Etretat, the famous town whose beach has been painted by Monet, Boudin, and Courbet, among others, the sun came out and we had a chance to climb to the top of the limestone cliffs and look out over the sea. If only we'd brought our paint-by-number sets!
