Tip: It's more difficult to travel in a country where you know little or nothing of the language, but learning a few phrases buys a lot of freewill! For bigger countries such as China, it's easier to take a tour rather than to try to manage travel plans on your own. On the other hand, my friends and I managed to travel through Thailand and Japan without too many problems.

Temples and Elephants! I was a little intimidated about going to Asia, but when some friends got a teaching gig in Japan and invited me to come visit, I knew I had a perfect opportunity. If I had any major problems, I figured that my friend Gail would be my backup plan. I envisioned calling her from the Tokyo Police Station and begging her to translate! Silly me! And since that first successful trip to Japan, I've traveled to Asia on several other occasions.
